T.O.O.L Fellowship Grant Projects

The Overcoming Obstacles to Liberty (T.O.O.L.) Fellowship will deepen teachers’ comprehension of rich American history through the use of exciting historical narratives and primary sources, along with the study of historical events, issues, and contemporary interpretations.  The T.O.O.L. Fellowship will investigate traditional American history in a systematic, chronological, and thematic fashion.  Fellows will use these methods when teaching, so students can more fully comprehend this rich American tradition.

Elementary & Middle School Lessons and Resources

Constitutions of Carolina, 1669
This lesson will introduce students to John Locke and the role he played in the early history of the Carolina colony.  The notion of legitimate slavery as an outcome of war and the rights of landowners will also be explored.

Toleration Act of 1689
This lesson will explore the separatist groups within the Church of England and how a state religion was established.  The students will also analyze the disadvantages of a single established state religion.

The Townshend Acts
T
his lesson will help students identify the impact of unfair taxes.  It will introduce them to one of the specific taxes imposed on the colonies by the King and ask them to identify the goods that were affected by the taxes and to analyze the impact of the tax.

The Battles of Princeton, Trenton and Monmouth
This lesson will expose students to some pivotal battles of the Revolutionary War that took place in the state of NJ.  Students will have the opportunity to identify military leaders, strategies, and long and short-term effects of the victories.

The Bill of Rights
In this lesson students will identify the Bill of Rights and interpret the meaning of the first ten amendments.  Students will analyze why the Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution. 

The Whiskey Rebellion
This lesson will introduce students to the events of The Whiskey Rebellion of 1794.  Students will examine the rebellion and its effects on the Constitution.  Washington’s response to the chain of events will also be analyzed.

German Immigration
In this lesson students will learn about the risks immigrants took to come to a new country and identify the benefits that came with those risks. 

Louisiana Purchase
In this lesson students will learn about the Louisiana Purchase, new states that entered the Union as a result of the Louisiana Purchase, the Federalists opposition to the purchase and the political impact on American relations with European powers.

Colored Troops and the Civil War
Students will be able to recognize the importance of the colored troops in the Civil War. Students will identify ways black soldiers were recruited and how art complimented the effort.

Frederick Douglass
In this lesson students will correlate the events in the lives of Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. to show the achievements of the two leaders in improving the lives of African Americans.

Industrialization in 19th Century New Jersey
In this cooperative learning activity students will analyze the confluence of geography, resources and technology in New Jersey that contributed to the growth of 19th Century industrialization and its’ characteristics.

The baseball scandal of 1919 and the story of one of the great baseball players of all time.
